April NPD Data

by Michael Comeau on May 15, 2008

Market-research outfit NPD will report April sales data after the market close today. Given the release of Take Two Interactive’s (TTWO) Grand Theft Auto IV on April 29th, expect year-over-year software dollar sales growth to exceed 100%, and there’s potential for a number over 120%. A number of that magnitude could drive GameStop (GME) higher on Friday.

Over on the hardware side, I’ll also be paying close attention to how the Sony PS3 does relative to the Microsoft Xbox 360. I’ve been expecting the PS3 to pick up significant steam this year, and it should continue to do so with Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4 on the way next month. In addition, I think Resistance 2 is going to be an absolute monster for the PS3 later this year due to its robust multiplayer options and extensive campaign.
