Okay. Okay. Okay. The Apple Tablet is real. I think. Sh*t!
“The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about.”
I can’t imagine Jobs is talking about Aperture 3.0 or iWork 10 (hey I’m excited about them!) – it’s got to be the elusive iTablet or iPad or iSlate or whatever it’s called.
I’m really curious to see what Apple pulls out because a tablet computer seems to be an exceptionally difficult design and marketing challenge. Sure, there will be early adopters and Apple addicts that will pick up whatever the company makes, but the mass market is another story.
The tablet essentially has to fit between the iPhone/iPod Touch and Macbook lines without stepping on any toes. Too big and too expensive, and a Macbook just makes more sense. Too small and inexpensive, and an iPhone is a better buy.
If I had to guess, I’d put the specs somewhere along these lines (obviously influenced by media reports/rumors):
- dazzling 9 inch color touch screen
- about a pound in weight
- special mobile-optimized iLife software
- 5+ megapixel camera with HD video functionality
- 802.11n wi-fi capabilities
- 3G data via wireless carrier (Verizon?)
I’ll end this post with a song: ‘Someone Great’ by LCD Soundsystem. Because that Steve Jobs, he’s someone great!
